Edmonds suffers setback

My all-time favorite athlete, Jimmy Freakin Edmonds, suffered a setback before Spring Training. Edmonds, 40, signed a minor-league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. With the injury, Edmonds does not appear he will be close to being ready for Spring Training with the Cards.
I was so excited the Reds traded for Edmonds last season because I got to see my favorite player, in my favorite teams jersey. If I am Bob Castellini and Walt Jocketty, when Jimmy Freakin Edmonds finally calls it quits, I am calling him and offering a position on the staff.
Jay Bruce was the player who benefited the most with Edmonds on the team. Imagine what he could do with a full year under Edmonds tutalege.
As always, I continue to wish Edmonds the best of luck throughout his career. He was truly an incredible centerfielder and I always tried to model my play after him. Thank you Jimmy and keep up the hard work.

Avalanche dealt two blows Monday

Valentines Day wasn't so lovely for the Colorado Avalanche. First, fan favorite and Avs legend, Peter Forsberg retired after a 2 game comeback. Forsberg retired due to a nagging foot injury. That wasn't the only thing that went wrong for the Avs on Monday.
The red-hot Calgary Flames came into Denver and gave the Avalanche a good ol country ass whoopin. The Avs got smacked down 9-1 and this game was over before the puck even dropped. The loss kept the Avalanche 14th in the Western Conference. It is a shame that Forsberg couldn't have played last night to receive the appropriate sendoff from the fans. There is no way in hell Forsberg could have saved the Avs from the beatdown they received, but it would have been the right way to go out.
Some Avalanche media types are saying this was the lowest point in franchise history. With this season lost, could it be the right time to can coach Joe Sacco and look for someone to fire up this young team and fanbase?

Wonder strike fires United to derby victory

On Saturday, Wayne Rooney scored a wonder goal, to down city rivals Manchester City 2-1 at Old Trafford. The link to the video can be seen here. The victory gives Manchester United 57 points, four more than second place Arsenal.
This is a very good sign for United because if Rooney finds his form, that made him a force last year, United will run away with the English Premier League title.

Bearcats heading down familiar path

Once again the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, fizzle out to end the season. The Bearcats dropped a tough 59-57 decision, to the hot St. John's Red Storm, Sunday at Fifth Third Arena.
Cincinnati is 4-6 since starting off the season 15-0. During the Mick Cronin era, the Bearcats have made it a habit of fading down the stretch. This loss today was devastating as they have, most likely, played themselves out of the NCAA tournament.
The worst part of today, was the fact that Yancy Gates decided to not show up. Gates is a fricken joke. This clown has played with absolutely zero passion. With guys like Gates on this team, they will go nowhere.
Sometimes I feel that I am watching the Cincinnati Bengals playing basketball. This team, I swear, tries to lose. They make just enough stupid mistakes to lose big games.
The folks in the athletic department at UC, should take a gander across town, at a powerhouse basketball program that is in the same spot every year. The Bearcats need to model themselves after Xavier because all the Muskateers seem to do, is win. Take note Mike Thomas.

NFL Lockout looming

Could it be? Could we really not have an NFL season this year? From the looks of things, there will be no NFL football this fall. If you care to listen to the media-types at ESPN and every other sports outlet, both sides (players union and owners) are not even in the same ballpark.
It is very hard to have sympathy for multi-millionaires and billionairs fighting over money. The basis of this urinating match, is the almighty dollar. Out of approx $9 billion that is made annually, the owners automatically get $1 billion and another billion going out, leaving the remaining $7 billion to be split up by the players.
The owners want more than the $1 billion leaving less for the ones who take the beating. If it wasn't for the players, the owners wouldn't be making all of this money.
I truly do not see this getting resolved anytime soon. The real question is, if the players are locked out and there is no football, how will the NFL recover from the strike? It is just hard to fathom how a sport, at its maximum popularity, could even go on strike.
These next couple of months will be very important as both sides will try and get a new CBA pounded out before a whole season is wiped out. Stay tuned as we could have just seen the last NFL football for a while.

Reds report 2011

Well it's that time again. The greatest words in sports, pitchers and catchers report, have been spoken once again this year. The Cincinnati Reds look to defend their NL Central Division crown.
While the other five teams in the division made changes, the Reds made very minimal changes. The most significant moves the Reds made this year, was signing World Series MVP, Edgar Renteria. He will be in the mix to play shortstop with Paul Janish.
The infield is set with Rolen, Janish/Renteria, Phillips and Votto. The outfield appears to be set with one question mark, left field. From the looks of things, Jonny Gomes will be platooning with, newly signed, Fred Lewis. The Reds will be in great shape if Jay Bruce can find his form (when Jim Edmonds was in town) and Drew Stubbs can improve on his solid 2010 season.
For me, the wild card in the outfield situation is, non-roster invitee, Jeremy Hermida. Hermida could see more playing time if he is able to recapture the form he had with the Florida Marlins.
The Reds will move forward in 2011 with the best pitching depth this franchise has seen in years. Bronson Arroyo, Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto have nailed down the top three spots in the rotation. Travis Wood, Homer Bailey and Mike Leake will battle for the final two spots in the rotation. No matter how you look at it, there will be a solid pitcher who will not be in the top five in the rotation.
Stay tuned as I will continue to break down the Reds in this 2011 season.
