My oh my, how the NCAA Division I conference landscape has changed. The shuffling of teams and conferences certainly is not done.
With Pitt and Syracuse heading to the ACC within the next couple of years, possibly along with UConn and Rutgers, there could be some major changes coming.
Currently, the Pac-12 is in talks with Oklahoma, Texas, Ok State and Texas Tech to jump the Big 12 ship and head to the Pac-12. That will make them the Pac-16, thus leaving Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor and Missouri left without a home.
That is where the Big East comes in. Since Pitt and Syracuse left, possibly along with UConn and Rutgers, there has been word that the Big 12 and Big East conference commissioners have met to discuss a merger. The merger could definitely help save some of these schools.
The Mountain West and Conference USA have discussed a merger as well. With that being said, what are TCU and Notre Dame going to do?
TCU is set to join the Big East next year. Some say, they may be better off staying in the MWC if it merges with Conference USA.
We all know that Notre Dame will be just fine.
The question is, will they join the Big 10 or the ACC? The way things are shaking down, Dan Wetzel of Yahoo says Notre Dame is better off in the ACC.
This just shows that money is the driving force behind all of this. Once the greedy school presidents get their hands on that, it is tough to get them to stop going for it.
The following weeks/months will be very interesting, as the landscape of Division I athletics will change.
Will that change be for the good?
When money is the driving force, it usually is not a good thing.
