The Champions are done!

That's right folks, Inter Milan have taken down the champions. Inter Milan, playing with 10 men for most of the match, knocked the defending Champions League holders, Barcelona, out of the tournament. Milan lost the 2nd leg tonight, 1-0 in the Nou Camp, but moved on with a 3-2 aggregate advantage. With the victory, Jose Mourinho and his men will take on Bayern Munich, on May 22 in Madrid, for all of the marbles. This should be a superb game and will definitely be one to watch. Stay tuned later as I will break down this fantastic matchup.

Great MLS international friendlies

There were a couple of MLS international friendlies that were announced today. First, the Seattle Sounders will host Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors on May 26. They will also be hosting Scottish powerhouse Celtic on July 18. These are huge games, although not as high profile as Chelsea and Barcelona like last season.

It was also announced that DC United will be taking on Scottish Champions, Rangers, at RFK Stadium on July 24. In addition, DC United will be hosting the Rossoneri, AC Milan on May 26, in a watered down friendly, as most players will be in South Africa with their national teams.

Bengals on the mark come draft day.

Sorry for the delay in posting this.

Here is a breakdown of the Cincinnati Bengals Draft picks, just click here.

Overall I would give the Bengals a solid B grade for the draft.

Yes they got a TE that in theory provides a legit 3rd or 4th option for Carson. But they thought they got that in chase coffman last year and that didn't work out. Yes they did add a solid nickle CB and did a very good job adding talented depth players on the defensive line and at linebacker. However, in my opinion, they really needed to get a safety. They had their chance to get 2 safties that when it is all said and done might become impact players. They could of traded up and got Taylor Mays in the second round or they could of taken Myron Rolle out of florida state in the 4th, 5th, or 6th round with their picks. Now if that name doesn't sound familiar or even if it does (and it should) it is because he didn't play college football last year. He was a stand out at Florida state 2 years ago but decide to become a road scholar last year and spent that year studying in England. Can't really blame the kid that is a phenominal opportunity. He was projected to be a first round pick last year had he not gone to England. Now part of the problem is he has made it clear that he wants to become a Doctor and go to med school, but also has stated he wants to play atleast 10 yrs in the NFL. He dropped because of this but performed extremely well at the senior bowl and at the combine and is in top shape and still a very good player. The Bengals really dropped the ball on not getting a Safety at all in this draft. Yes they have depth at that position but the problem is all of those guys are very unreliable with all missing time last year due to injury. They need a durable impact player at that position and the guys they have just are not it.

All in all it was a very solid draft and the Bengals did what they needed to do for the most part. They added a lot of talented players and guys that have played at big time programs in college and have played or won national championships. They have added some wonderful depth to their roster and won't be hurt as bad when injuries do hit, because we all know at some point they happen it is the NFL.

Petraglia is Miami's man.

Miami hockey Head Coach Enrico Blasi has made his choice to replace departed assistant coach Chris Bergeron who left last week to take the Head Coaching position at Bowling Green. Blasi has tabbed Nick Petraglia the man for the job. Petraglia a Miami alumni who served as a back up goaltender at the turn of the century has been apart of the Miami program for the better part of a decade. He served as a graduate assistant after his playing days were done, and then served as a volunteer assistant for three seasons. The past 3 seasons he served as Miami's director of Hockey operations. Coach Blasi made the point to want to keep things within the family and the familiarity Nick brings with the players and the direction the program is heading seemed to be a big factor in the decision. Nick will be in charge of on ice coaching and will do the bulk of the recruiting.
Also announced was that current assistant coach Brent Brekke was promoted to Associate Head Coach.
For me personally it came as a little bit of a surprise as I thought they would go with a more offensive minded assistant but you can't go wrong with Nick. He is extremely familiar with the program and the inner workings of the "brotherhood". Having served as Coach Blasi's right hand man the last few seasons it does make sense that he gets this opportunity.

2010 Bengals Schedule released

From the Bengals
The Bengals' 2010 schedule, released today by the National Football League, features nationally televised night games on ESPN, the NFL Network and NBC.
Two of the three national games are scheduled at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bengals will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 8 on ESPN's Monday Night Football, and the San Diego Chargers are slated to visit on Dec. 26 on NBC's Sunday Night Football.
The NFL Network game on the schedule is at the New York Jets on Thursday night, Nov. 25. It will be the first Thanksgiving game in Bengals history.
With two prime-time telecasts on the Bengals' preseason schedule, the club is slated for five total national prime-time broadcasts for only the second time. In 1990, the Bengals played one prime-time game in preseason and four in the regular season.
The NFL's flexible scheduling program is in effect for the season's last seven weeks, however, and six of Cincinnati's last seven games are subject to possible kickoff time and network changes. This includes the Dec. 26 night game against San Diego, and the Bengals? five 1 p.m. Sunday games during the last seven weeks could be moved to either late-afternoon or night kickoffs. In 2009, Cincinnati's scheduled 1 p.m. game at the New York Jets on the season's final Sunday was moved to prime time on NBC.
Cincinnati's Thanksgiving game this season is the one among the final seven that is not subject to change
For only the second time in franchise history, the Bengals will open the season with three of their first four games on the road. The first instance was in 1973, and the Bengals went 2-2 in those games, en route to a 10-4 season and the AFC Central Division championship.
Cincinnati opens the year on Sept. 12 at New England and will play the home opener on Sun., Sept. 19 against division rival Baltimore.
"As a defending division champion, we knew we were scheduled against the other three division winners in the AFC," said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, "and today's release of the dates and kickoff times brings the anticipated challenges.
"We open with two games against 2009 playoff teams (Patriots and Ravens), and we will have the players' attention right away regarding having three of the first four away from home. We do get the payback of having two of the last three games at home, and you are looking for great support from your home crowd in those crucial finishing games."
The Bengals will play their season opener on the road for the fifth time in the last six years.

Volquez nailed with 50 game suspension

Cincinnati Reds Pitcher Edinson Volquez was hit with a 50 game suspension for testing positive for PED's or performance enhancing drugs. It appears the Reds will activate Volquez and since he is not due back until July at the earliest (due to Tommy John surgery), he can begin to serve his suspension.
Here is a statement released by Volquez:
"Prior to the conclusion of last season, my wife and I sought medical advice in Cincinnati with the hope of starting a family. As part of my consultation with the physician, I received certain prescribed medications to treat my condition. As a follow up to our original consultation, my wife and I visited another physician in our home city in the Dominican Republic this past off-season. This physician also gave me certain prescribed medications as part of my treatment. Unfortunately, I now know that the medication the physician in the Dominican gave me is one that is often used to treat my condition, but is also a banned substance under Major League Baseball?s drug policy. As a result, I tested positive when I reported to spring training.
Although I understand that I must accept responsibility for this mistake and have chosen not to challenge my suspension, I want to assure everyone that this was an isolated incident involving my genuine effort to treat a common medical issue and start a family. I was not trying in any way to gain an advantage in my baseball career. I am embarrassed by this whole situation and apologize to my family, friends, fans, teammates, and the entire Reds Organization for being a distraction and for causing them any difficulty. I simply want to accept the consequences, learn from the mistake, and continue to strive to be the best person and baseball player I can be."

Good for him, stepping up and hitting this head on, instead of hiding and not saying anything about it. If the above is true, I have indeed gained more respect for Volquez.

Bruce showing signs of life.

With Jay Bruce knocking his frist and second home runs of the season last night he has shown signs of turning the corner. Bruce started his major league career off with a bang but since hasn't shown much spark. With an injury plague season last year he is looking to improve mentally in hopes that will improve things physically.
One thing people tend to forget is that Jay is only 22 yrs old. In his third major league season he is still extremely young. Lets give the kid a little break and let him develop he is still a remarkable talent.

Cyclones success begins with Smith

Cincinnati Cyclones goalie Jeremy Smith has picked his game up towards the end of the season. Smith had a great season and it continued with the 'Clones first-round series victory of the defending ECHL Champions, the South Carolina Stingrays. Here is a great article on Smith by the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Suspend Big Ben for the season

It is time for the NFL to set a harsh example. Being a Miami fan, I loved when Ben was at Miami. I was bummed to see him go to the Steelers. I always respected him, that is until he couldn't keep his pants up. Roethlisberger is just a cocky ass who has the mentality that since he is an NFL quarterback, that he is god. That's not how it works, big guy. You still need to respect women. No means no. Here is a link to the police report, courtesy of The Smoking Gun. Cheers to another professional athlete who is just a self-centered punk ass. I've said this for years, kids should not look up to a professional athlete. It's sad, but as we all know, it takes a few bad apples (Tiger, Big Ben, Kobe, etc...) to spoil the batch.

Tony Scheffler a Bengal?

According to Joe Reedy, via Twitter, a "trade for Broncos TE Tony Scheffler is firmly within the realm of possibilities." Stay tuned for further details.

Great start to the NHL Playoffs

Well last night was a great start for me in regards to the NHL playoffs. The Colorado Avalanche pulled off a stunning victory, 2-1, in game 1 against the San Jose Sharks. The Avalanche tossed all the crap they keep hearing about how they don't deserve to be in the playoffs. Well folks, let me tell you one thing, this team could care less. They are an extremely young team and will certainly use that to their advantage as they take on the Western Conference #1 seed.
John-Michael Liles got the scoring started in the 2nd period on the power play, with assists going to Paul Stastny and Matt Duchene. The Avalanche held the 1-0 lead until Ryane Clowe evened the score eight minutes into the 3rd. The game appeared to be heading into overtime until Avalanche winger Chris Stewart's pass went off the skate of Sharks defenseman, and former Avs player, Rob Blake, and into the net. This could be the start of things to come as the Avalanche needed to steal a game in San Jose to give them a chance. Now this team truly believes and this will be a very dangerous combination.
In other NHL playoff action, Ottawa had five different players score goals and Senators goalie Brian Elliott did just enough, as the Senators took game 1, 5-4 over Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Igloo.
The Phoenix Coyotes continued their hot streak and used the power play to their advantage, by scoring three times with the man advantage, to defeat the Detroit Red Wings to take a 1-0 series lead.
The Philadelphia Flyers went into New Jersey and took down Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils, 2-1, in game 1 on their conference series.
We have three game 1's on tap for tonight. Below is the schedule for tonight:

Boston @ Buffalo 7:00 pm
Montreal @ Washington 7:00 pm
Los Angeles @ Vancouver 10:00 pm

Best hockey fights of 2009-10

Check out the best fights from the 2009-10 NHL season according to HockeyFights.com. There is definitely some good fisticuffs in there. Enjoy!

Get off Bruce's back

There is now a little uproar about Jay Bruce's actions last night after hitting a double in the 2nd inning against the Marlins. Bruce, who had been in an absolutely brutal slump, smacked a double. While standing on second base, the cameras caught Bruce, with a SEG (s*** eatin grin), flipping off the Reds dugout (see photo below).

(photo used from: http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/7015/1000917.jpg)
Now, any guy who has ever played a second of sports, knows this is how its done, when you're in the middle of a slump and your teammates are giving you crap. Personally, I love it. I'll admit, I've done it before, and I would do it again. It is all fun and games and people need to loosen their undies and calm down. Keep it up Jay, don't listen to all these people who are upset about this stupid crap. Just keep trottin out there everyday and give it your best!

Its official Chris Bergeron gone to Bowling Green.

The sign of a truly great program or organization at any level is when your assistant coaches start getting head coaching positions. Well Miami University has been at or near the top of the college hockey landscape for the last 5 or 6 years now and show no signs of letting up. Making back to back frozen fours doesn't hurt either. Head coach Enrico Blasi has truly built something special and he didn't do it alone. Two years ago assistant coach Jeff Blashill left to take a head coaching position at the junior ranks hoping to spring board it into something bigger and he has. Coach Blashill who was the defensive coach has now been hired at Western Michigan University to lead their program. It doesn't stop their. Former Miami captain and standout player Chris Bergeron, too, has gotten an opportunity after being an assistant at Miami for 10 yrs he now has been hired to lead Bowling Green State Universities hockey program. Both coaches have had intricate roles in helping build Miami's program to where it is today. I am extremely happy for both guys who couldn't be any nicer. I wish them well on their new adventures, except when they play Miami.

The search for Miami is on for another assistant coach. They have a definite appeal to someone who is looking to further their career and I have no doubt hundreds of applications will come in. A couple names I will throw out as great candidates are Brian Vickers, who currently works with the program, and was an assistant at Denver under George Gwozdecky. Another candidate is former Ohio St. head coach John Markell, who is a great recruiter and might flourish in this type of role, and former Miami player and Stanley cup winner Kevin Adams. Adams has been seen around the program a lot since retiring from the NHL and if coaching is a direction he might be interested in this would be a great spot to start. Adams already knows the school, tradition, and having played with current head coach Enrico Blasi while at Miami.

Stay tuned, the off season may of just started but things will certainly heat up over the next month or so.

REDS WIN!!!!!.....and Leake too.

Well I would call it a successful professional debut for Mike Leake. He threw over 100 pitches, went into the 7th inning, and was in full control. Yes he was a little wild but he pitched out of jams throughout the game. Having the bases loaded in the first inning, with no outs, Mike Leake was masterful in getting out of that jam. Not only did he strike out 5 and battle on the mound. Leake earned a no decision, only giving up 1 run, but he got his first major league hit with a rope up the middle. He added an additional hit in the 5th and had a phenomenal debut. This wasn't just his major league debut, but Leake pitched in his first professional game today. After being the Reds first round pick in last summers draft(8th overall), he signed late and didn't play in the minors. He pitched in the Arizona Fall league and in spring training, earning a spot on this Reds roster. He still has some things to work out, but he was very impressive, and just added to an already strong and deep pitching staff.

National Championship preview

Well tonight is the night the NCAA will crown their 2010 National Champion in men's ice hockey. Both Wisconsin and Boston College showed why they deserve to be in this game, as they both completely dismantled their opponents. Wisconsin started the Frozen Four off on the right foot by dumptrucking poor RIT, 8-1, in the first game of the semifinals.
Boston College pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the tournament by dominating, top-ranked Miami, 7-1 in the second game. Wisconsin was just the better team as RIT had no chance to skate with them. The other game was a different story. BC used their speed and physical play to take Miami out of their game. That will be what BC will be trying to do against the highly skilled Badgers. Wisconsin will use their solid defense to shut down the speed of Boston College. This will be a great championship game, and will certainly entertain the massive crowd in Ford Field.

The 2 Sports Freaks prediction: Wisconsin 4 Boston College 2

Calling Miami......

Well in a shell shocker last night, Boston College left no questions to be answered, in the second semi-final of this years Frozen Four, at Ford Field. Boston College beat Miami 7-1, in front of a new world record indoor crowd of 34,000+. The place was packed, loud, and electric for the second game after Wisconsin dismantled RIT 8-1. The game lived up to the hype for the first 49 minutes, then the flood gates opened up. In a back and forth first period BC led 1-0, with a late power play goal, in the last 2 min of the first period. Shots were even at 5 a side, with both teams getting some quality scoring chances. In the second period Miami took a penalty 8 seconds in and BC capitalized a short time later, for their second power play goal, and a 2-0 lead. About a minute later, Whitney for BC found himself all alone in the slot and sniped the corner on Connor Knapp. That goal chased Knapp from the game and put Miami in a big hole down 3-0. Miami, however, picked up the pace and BC goalie John Muse was equal to the challenge, making some really big saves in the later half of the second period. Heading into the third period BC was up 3-0. Miami came out flying in the third period getting some really big saves from Cody Reichard. At the 14 minute mark, Joe Hartman finally beat Muse on the far side, and put Miami on the board to make it a 3-1 game. After a long review, for who knows what reason, they resumed play and any momentum Miami gained was gone. Miami still came with some pressure, until a harmless little backhand shot went through the five hole of Reichard and gave BC a 4-1 lead with a little over 11 minutes to play. At that point you could feel the air go out of the building. Miami players seemed stunned after that goal and BC ended up scoring 3 more in the last 10 min to win 7-1. This game was much closer than the final score indicated and it's a shame that it did end the way it did as it wasn't an indicator of the game itself.
You have got to tip your hats to Boston College, as they were able to establish their style of play early in the game and wouldn't let Miami play their puck possession game. BC pressured Miami relentlessly and it caused them all sorts of problems. Miami was never able to adjust to it and found themselves playing catch up all game. Along with that something that had been a strong hold for them all year was great goaltending and Miami didn't get that last night. Everyone is entitled to a bad night, and it is a shame that it came in the biggest game of the year, but hey it happens.
All in all, its a great season for Miami, for all that they had to go through with their head coach going through a rough divorce, a manager dieing tragically in a car accident, and one of their junior leaders on defense having been hospitalized for a heart condition, you can only ask so much of these kids. Making two straight Frozen Four runs is impressive in and of itself. Losing only 2 seniors who played last night, Miami will return 18 of 20 players dressed, provided nobody leaves early for the NHL. That is a promising sign of good things still to come and a chance to make another run next year at a National Championship.

Thank you Coach Blasi and the Miami Redhawks on a great season and a memorable run. Not the way you wanted to finish but still a great season!

Frozen 4 Preview

The time has come! The Frozen 4 is upon us! Scott is currently up in Detroit for the games tomorrow. I unfortunately have to work and will be unable to make it up until Saturday. I will be previewing the two Semi-Final matchups.

Game 1: 5:00 ESPN2
RIT vs Wisconsin

This game is what some people would call a "David vs Goliath" match up. RIT was given absolutely zero chance to advance out of the East region. The Tigers upset the top seeded Denver Pioneers in game 1 then absolutely dismantled New Hampshire 6-2 to advance to the schools first ever Frozen Four, in their first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament.
The Wisconsin Badgers didn't dominate the West Region like they were expected to. The Badgers are loaded with top tier talent, including Hobey Baker finalist, Blake Geoffrion.
As much as I would love to see this be a very close game, I think that Wisconsin is just too strong and they should not have any problems disposing of the Tigers. RIT goaltender Jared DeMichiel will be under fire from Wisconsin. If DeMichiel is able to stand on his head, then RIT will definitely have a chance to upset the heavily favored Badgers.

2 Sports Freaks Prediction: Wisconsin 4 RIT 1

Game 2: 8:30 ESPN2
Miami vs Boston College

This Frozen Four is all about redemption for Miami. The Redhawks have gone through so many ups and downs this season. After the heartbreak of losing the National Championship last year, in the fashion they did, they used that as motivation all season long. Add in the loss of friend, team assistant, Brendan Burke in a tragic car crash, and the divorce of coach Enrico Blasi, this team has more than enough motivation to bring a National Championship to Oxford. Miami has been able to overcome some obstacles in their way to Detroit. First Miami defeated Alabama-Huntsville 2-1 in the first game of the Midwest Regional, setting up a matchup against Michigan. Miami had never defeated Michigan during tournament time and Miami had yet to win an overtime tournament game. Miami killed those two birds with one Alden Hirschfeld goal. Miami moved on to the Frozen Four with a 3-2 victory over Michigan in double overtime. Miami is a very deep team and they boast two of the top goalies in the country in Connor Knapp and CCHA Goalie of the Year, Cody Reichard.
Boston College had no problem taking care of Alaska in the first game of the Northeast Regional. They made it to the Frozen Four after defeating Yale in a 9-7 shootout. BC has shown all year that they could win the shootout and they can win the close games. Coach Jerry York and BC have knocked Miami out of the tournament 3 out of the past 4 years.
This is the year Miami will finally defeat a Boston team in the tournament. Miami is too deep and too talented to not win this game. Miami will once again rely on their studly goaltending to keep the opponents at bay. Miami will exercise the demons and use their experiences and motivations to once again have a crack at the National Championship.

2 Sports Freaks Prediction: Miami 3 BC 2

Robben stunner ousts Manchester United from Champions League

Bayern Munich forward Arjen Robben scored on a beautiful volley, that beat his former Holland international teammate Edwin Van Der Sar in the 74th minute, to knock Manchester United out of the UEFA Champions League.
United got things rolling early with a goal from Darren Gibson in the 3rd minute. Nani doubled the United advantage just 4 minutes later. Nani made it 3-0 United, 4-2 aggregate advantage, with a goal in the 41st minute.
Bayern pulled one back through Ivica Olic in the 43rd minute. Robben stunned the Old Trafford faithful with the goal that eventually knocked United out of the Champions League, through the away goals rule.
Bayern will square off against French foes, Lyon on April 21, at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Chi Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle makes the play of the year

Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle makes spectacular defensive players at least once a year. He definitely brought his "A" game on Opening Day. Buehrle made the play of the year yesterday as he flipped the baseball between his legs to first baseman Paul Konerko after Buehrle deflected the ball with his leg on a comebacker. Check out the play courtesy of the Big League Stew blog from Yahoo sports.

Looks like Leake is the guy

In the battle for the Reds fifth starter, Mike Leake has been named the guy to round out the rotation. Leake was the Reds first round pick, 8th overall, in the 2009 draft. Leake beat out left hander Travis Wood and the Cuban Missile, Aroldis Chapman. What makes this amazing is the fact that Leake has not pitched a single inning in the minor leagues.
This spring, Leake appeared in 6 games, 18 innings, starting two of those games. Leake went 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA, 16 hits, four walks and 10 strikeouts. Leake should be making his Major League debut on April 11 against the Cubs. For more information, check out the article from the Cincinnati Reds.

Blasi gets an extension!

Enrico Blasi received a contract extension yesterday which will keep him in Oxford, OH through the 2016-2017 season. Big win for AD Brad Bates and Miami University to keep Blasi in town. Timing is questionable, with his team a week away from competing in the Frozen Four, but with some big time jobs open it is the right thing to do to lock him up long term.
